Colossians 2:20-23

Questioning Human Decrees

Rooted in Christ · Colossians 2

Story guide: Having died with Christ, believers need not submit to human decrees as though those rules could give them new life. Severe restrictions may appear wise, but outward harshness cannot overcome the desires of the flesh.

20If you died with the Messiah from the elemental principles of the world, why, as if living in the world, are you submitting yourselves to decrees:

21“Do not handle, nor taste, nor touch,”

22These all perish with use, according to the commandments and teachings of men.

23These indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and humility and harsh treatment of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
